Files from old computer missing!

Today, I replaced an old computer with my personal laptop and wanted to restore the files that mozy backed-up from the old computer to the new computer.  Instead of doing this, or showing me any of the windows that are discussed in "Replacing a Computer" from FAQs, nothing happened.  Twice, I selected the files that I needed to restore from my old computer and twice, nothing happened.  The next thing I realized, mozy was instead backing up all the files from my new computer and the old ones were no where to be found.  How can I access the files that were from my old computer and put them onto my new computer.  Please help me!!!!!  What did I do wrong?

Re: Files from old computer missing!

If you have not installed Mozy on the new computer, the only way to download your files is using the Web Restore method. You simply Log In to your Mozy account and click the "Restore Files" link and follow the steps to choose "Web Restore".

You can also install Mozy on the new machine using the same email address and Mozy will ask you if you want to Replace the existing machine or adding another one. If you choose to Replace the machine, it will re-associate the data from the old machine with the new machine. You can then use the In-Client Restore method to download your files. This is the recommended way and it is done through the Mozy Client software. Just right click on Mozy icon in the system tray and select "Restore Files...".

Re: Files from old computer missing!

Hi,

I did it the second way you mentioned, but instead of restoring the files from my old computer to my new computer, mozy instead began backing up files on the new computer.  I'm not sure if the files that were backed up from the old computer are lost or in the mozy system somewhere.   If they are still there, I need to find a way to access them and restore them to the new computer, but I don't know how.

keke08,

Since you have done Replacing a Computer [74033], take a look at MozyHome Quick Start Guide for Restoring [80141].

Re: Files from old computer missing!

Hi there, I looked at the account that's registered with the email address associated with your username. I'm still able to see the previous backup sessions that go back to August. Try open the Restore interface from the Configuration window again, on the top right hand corner you can specify the Backup Date, clicking on that should open a small calender window, your previous backup dates should be in bold, select a date then and then click on Restore Files.

Re: Files from old computer missing!

Hi,

I thought this would work, and after spending a long time (I don't want to even specify how long), selecting the files to restore from the 8/4/2010 date, all I got was a RestoreError.  Twice.  I changed the destination file twice, and still have a restore error.  Why?

hashemh,

Does this re-association of data mean that if I have done a local copy of my files to the new machine, then Mozy will be able to continue to perform incremental backups without downloading or re-uploading those files? If so, for this to work must the new computer have an identical folder structure to the old one?

This is an important feature for anyone moving pc with a large backup set.

Thanks for any more detail on this subject. The tutorial does not mention anything about localy copying to a new computer.

Re: Files from old computer missing!

Yes, as long as the file structure is the same, data will be reassociated. If I am not mistaken, you have Restored all your files from an external drive and now you have the same file structure (paths of files and folders). All you need to do is select the same data for backup as you had before and it will reassociate since Mozy already has a copy.
