Restoring Files from Mozy Sync

So, we've already talked about why you need Sync and how to install it, and then we discussed the best practices for using Mozy Sync to share your files, but how about restoring files from Sync? It's necessary sometimes... Here's why.

Why Would You Restore Files from Sync?

Sync does store a copy of your synced files in your Mozy account, as well as previous versions of files

  • You deleted a file from Sync. When you delete a file from your Sync folder, it will sync those changes over and delete the file from all other Sync folders on your other computers or devices and it may be necessary to log in and restore it from your account.
  • You got a new computer/deleted all files in Sync. If you got a new computer, but had already deleted all the files in Sync so it can't just re-sync, you may want to download the files from your account.
  • You're on a computer where Sync isn't installed. If you're at another location where you haven't installed (and don't plan to install) Sync, you may need to access a file from your online account.
  • You need a previous version. You may have made and saved changes to a file in Sync and now you need to go back to a previous version. Luckily, Mozy Sync saves previous versions within your data retention period.

How to Restore Files From Sync

So there are two basic options for restoring files from Sync when you need them. You can sync them from another machine with Sync installed (best for when you have a new or repaired/replacement computer), or you can do a web restore for your Sync folders.

Restoring Files via a Sync Install

If you're setting up a new machine where Sync hasn't been installed, or it's a repaired machine where it needs to be reinstalled, the easiest method is to simply install Sync on the machine again to link it with the existing Sync data. Installing the Sync folder and linking it to your current account information will simply sync all of the files into the new Sync folder from the account/existing Sync container.

Restoring Sync Files via the Web

Restoring Sync files via the web restore is not really meant for large downloads or for downloading everything, and it only has access to the Instant Download restore option for that reason. It is advised that you only do small or single-file downloads. Maximum file-size is 5GB for Individual Download Restores.

  1. Log into your account at mozy.com/login
    • For MozyHome Users, skip to step 5
    • For MozyPro Admins, continue to step 2
    • For MozyPro Users with a subdomain log in with your Admin-provided subdomain then skip to step 4
    • For MozyPro Users without a Subdomain, contact your Admin
  2. Click on Search/List Users from the left-hand menu under Users
  3. Click on the user email you want to access Sync for
  4. To the right of Sync under the list of machines, click Access Files or the folder icon

  1. In the Web Access window click on Synced from the left hand menu
  2. Navigate to the file you'd like to restore in your Sync folder

  1. Download the file via the Instant Download method
    • Click directly on the name of the file to start the download
    • Check the box to the left of the file name and then click the blue Download button

The file will then download directly through your web browser. It may or may not ask you to Save or Run the file, if it does, choose Save. It may or may not ask you to choose a location to save it to, if it does not, it is likely in your default or last-chosen save location.

Restoring Previous Versions of Sync Files via the Web

As mentioned above, another reason you may want to restore files from Sync is to get a previous version of a file you've recently saved over. To do so:

  5. In the Web Access window click on Synced from the left hand menu

  1. Navigate to the file in your Sync folder that you'd like to restore a previous version for
  2. Click on the little versions icon to the right of the file VersionsIcon.PNG
    • If this icon does not appear, it means you do not have any previous versions to restore from. This may be because the previous versions were older than your data retention period or that you have not saved any previous versions.

  1. Select the radial button for the version you wish to restore
  2. Click the blue Download button from the right hand panel

The file will then download directly through your web browser. It may or may not ask you to Save or Run the file, if it does, choose Save. It may or may not ask you to choose a location to save it to, if it does not, it is likely in your default or last-chosen save location.

@angelag@ShawnL... Another excellent blog article.

I personally use Mozy Sync restore for several reasons.  One is to restore a previous file version to confirm earlier data.  Another is to restore a file on a third party computer during a meeting, client discussion, etc.  Fortunately, I have never required a major restore due to equipment problem, etc.  Hope I never need to.  Smiley Happy

Keep the blogs coming ... good stuff.

@lovetolovethewold  ... It doesn't look like you were logged in when you asked about Mozy Sync and Mozy Stash, but maybe you will see this reply.

Mozy Stash is the name used during the Beta testing period.  The name was changed to Mozy Sync when the program was released for general use.  I guess you could say that Sync is the "grown-up" version of Stash.

Thanks a bunch!

@lovetolovetheworld - Just like @Wayward mentioned, Stash is the old name of Sync. Did you have any questions about Sync that we can answer?
